This report discusses the results of a national survey of Canadian high school students undertaken in order to investigate what life at school is like for students with sexual or gender minority status. It found that homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia remain rampant in Canadian schools, which negatively impacts students’ personal sense of safety, attendance rates, sense of connectedness, wellbeing, and academic achievement. In the report, Egale recommends that school boards, administrators, and teachers should:

  • Include 2SLGBT students in all decision making
  • Prioritize supporting the safety and wellbeing of trans students
  • Recognize the importance and impact of compounding oppression
  • Meaningfully include individuals and organizations with established expertise in inclusive education
